DNS

May mean either, "Domain Name System" or "Domain Name Server".

Domain Name System

this designates the naming system in general, which is a global decentralized and distributed directory that allows one to convert numerical addresses (IP addresses, used by machines to communicate with each other) into alphanumerical addresses (domain names, easier to memorize for people), and vice versa. For example, 217.70.177.41 <-> www.gandi.net. This makes the internet easier to use.

Domain Name Server

this designated the computers that make up the system. It is also the most common use of the DNS acronym, and the one that we use in this FAQ.

DNS servers (primary DNS and secondary DNS), with a permanent connection to the internet, allow one to access content from only providing a name. For example, once you request access to www.gandi.net, the machines dns0.gandi.net and dns1.gandi.net know where to find the information that is stored on our web pages.

A DNS server is configured in such a way as to be able to reply to DNS requests, and it may be authorized to act on behalf of one several domain names. It must always be connected to the internet via a static IP address. This means that a nameserver cannot work with a temporary and/or dynamic IP address, which is notably the case with conventional RTC or ADSL connections. As it is difficult for an individual to meet these technical obligations, certain companies provide customers with the possibility of hosting their DNS servers, like Gandi, other registrars, and hosts for example,
