Restoring a Domain Name

Restoration of a domain name is necessary if you want to restore a domain name that has been deleted, which occurs 30 days after the expiration date of a .com, .net, .org, .info, or .biz domain name.

You can see whether or not your domain needs to be restored by looking it up on our Whois search engine; if the status says Redemption Period or Pending Delete Restorable, the domain can only be restored.

We have provided in-depth information on the Redemption Period and the Pending Delete Restorable status in our FAQ.

Why is it more expensive?

Restoration is more expensive than a renewal because the registries charge Gandi more for the operation. Though we would like to be able to restore domain names for less, we need to recover the high cost of the restoration procedure.

How can I restore a .com or .net?

You can restore a .com or .net domain just as you would proceed with a renewal. The only difference is that you will be charged more for the operation.

How can I restore a .info, .org, or .biz?

You can only restore a .info, .org, or .biz domain by first contacting a Gandi Customer Care Representative via our online form. You will then be given information as to how to proceed with a wire transfer, in addition to the deadline and reference number.

What if I don't restore my domain?

If you choose to not restore your .com, .net, .org, .biz, .or .info domain name, it will be deleted by the registry 35 days after it's being put on Redemption Period or Pending Delete Restorable (see the FAQ for the other TLD). At that time, it will be released by the registry and will be available for registration by anyone in the world, on a first-come, first-served basis.

Please keep in mind that there is a very strong possibility that a cybersquatter or someone else might obtain the domain before you do. Therefore, if the domain is really important to you, it is strongly recommended that you not let it be released, by restoring it.

Return to the renewal process.
