This month we will remind you of a nice way to save money on your IaaS

case you missed it, we will introduce the latest Gandi t-shirt (limited

Of particular interest to privacy advocates will be the new ICANN
contract. In some ways we are all privacy advocates these days, since we
seem to have less and less of it every time we turn around, or look in
the news. The new contract will means some big changes, though. To round

1. The New Gandi Flex

4. The .CO on sale and then some

The this extension is, according to Google, the latest gTLD. The
previous promotion of 50% was valid until July 4th, but today it is
extended until the end July. But that's not all! During the week of July

5. A new ICANN contract: big changes
--------------------------------------------------
As you probably know, thousands of new domains will soon appear in the
Internet landscape. With over 300,000 pre-registrations, it's clear our
customers are interested. This has not escaped the attention of ICANN,
the supreme ruler of domain names, which has "proposed" a new version of
the basic registrar contract. As you might imagine, this contract is the
subject of controversy for all global registrars, and the verbal jousts
are in full force in forums and mailing lists. We are already planning
to implement some of the provisions before the end of the year. For
example, we will now have an obligation to check the contact data you
enter when you register a domain and ensure that the domain contacts are
reachable. We will let you know the details as they become more certain,
but you can already get a glimpse of what it will be like in this post

Spring is springing in the Northern Hemisphere, and while our
Australian customers prepare for Fall, the US and Europe are
getting ready to enjoy a return to sunshine and warm weather.
As the natural clouds thin and dissipate, Gandi's cloud computing
is rushing in to fill the gap. We are launching a new cloud instance
in beta test mode, a node.js/PgSQL Simple Hosting family! Combine
this with the recently announced Git support, and you have a
super-easy way to deploy dynamic web applications on reliable,
fast, and predictable infrastructure.


There is action on the domain name side too, with 2013 set to be the
year that ICANN fulfills the promise of the new gTLD releases.
Gandi is offering you the chance to get your request in line for the
domains you want to register with these new extensions, with our
pre-reservation system. There are over 40,000 already reserved! Now
we are also offering trademark protection for these extensions through
TradeMark Clearinghouse.

1. Pre-book a new gTLD domain at Gandi

Now you can pre-book the domains you want to register with the
upcoming batch of Top-Level Domain names. We have a registration
system online.


We have listed 576 extensions that have so far not been blocked or
otherwise prevented from getting released.
We left out Internationalized special-character extensions
(IDN gTLDs) as these are of interest only to small numbers of
localized registrants. We included all of those we considered
to be popular in some way, to make sure we meet the most possible
demand. All pre-bookings you make are free, and will guarantee you
a chance at registering when the TLDs concerned open.
This is also a good way to keep abreast of developments in the
market, since we will be notifying you about any domains you pre-book.

2. Trademark protection with the new gTLDs

With any new extension comes concerns about trademarks, brands, and
intellectual property. ICANN anticipated this, of course, and so for
the new gTLDs, there is a system in place to centralize the
management of these concerns. This aptly named "TradeMark Clearinghouse"
will be in charge of managing documentation related to
trademarks, and making them available for anyone involved in the
registration of new extensions. This will result in significant
simplification of the process, and help to reduce the costs associated
with verification, especially for those who wish to register domains
with several extensions. It will also provide a monitoring system, to
alert you when someone else registers your domain name with a different
extension.
Obviously, this service comes with a fee. Our corporate team has

3. Big promotion on .PW

Opening for registration at the end of last month .PW is now being
offered for a stunningly low price of just $4 (€3, or £2.75) excl. VAT for new, one-year
registrations.
This domain is quite popular, and its use to denote "password" or
"pro-web" is catching on. If you want to join the fun, you have until
early June (or about the same time as winter ends in Europe this year!).

4. New Simple Hosting instance: node.js / PgSQL

A new kind of instance is now available (in beta for the moment).
This time we are making an instance dedicated to developers using
node.js. We are offering this with the PostegreSQL database to start
with, but will later add support for MongoDB, for those 10gen fans out
there. In the meantime, if you want to test it out and give us feedback,
you are welcome to! Our wiki page on this new instance family can be

It's almost spring, though winter is visiting Europe once again for a last hurrah. Gandi has some updates for you to get you through the remaining dark days...
The git tool is now available on Gandi Simple Hosting, making the beta testers happy and rubbing their hands with anticipation of super easy code and content management. If that doesn't warm your heart, how about a new version of Basekit? Lots of cool things there, and we are also launching a new extension, .PW. For your viewing pleasure, we are making a nice preview of some gTLDs (a whole lot of them are on the way), and even letting you pre-select the ones you want. For a cold, hard reality that is not yet upon us, there is a price increase on the way for some popular extensions (though thankfully not for .COM).


1. git available on Beta Hosting Simple
--------------------------------------------
git is a code and file management tool well known to many web developers. This tool allows you to do version management on your code, revert easily to prior versions, merge code, fork, and collaborate. It's available right now, in beta test in the Paris data center. Anyone can start an instance there, so no reason to wait! To learn more about using git on your instances, click here.


2. A new version of BaseKit is ready to roll

We are rolling out a new Gandi Basekit version this week, with new and improved templates, easier upgrades and better management screens. If you had been wanting to try Basekit, check it out now!  Here are some features we have added


3. Launch of the .PW extension
-------------------
.PW is the official extension of Palau, in Micronesia, with a little more
20,000 inhabitants. Most geeks (like us) think of "password" when we see the .PW at the end of a domain, but you could also think "Pro-Web", as in a professional working online. So if you are a Web marketing professional from Palau, or a geek sporting a beard, or both, you need to know that the official opening of this extension is on March 25th, and everyone is welcome to register. If you want to pre-registrer your .PW domains at Gandi,  just log in to your Gandi account, and register now! Prices for a .PW start at $15.00 (read more).



4. New extensions: you need to know
----------------------------------------------
Did you know that 2000 new extensions will be created over the next two years by ICANN? From .PARIS to .FOO (not to mention .FUN), registrations will multiply and domain names abound! Although many extensions will soon be forgotten after 15 minutes of fame, many will be imprinted permanently in the Internet landscape.

 

As always with this sort of thing, excluding the protection afforded to brand names, it is the law of first come, first served. Currently, estimates of the availability dates for the first extensions are leaning towards September. However, the registries do not yet know the conditions, nor the rates, for granting registrations.

 

That's why, starting at the end of the month, Gandi is offering pre-registration! This will allow you to choose among the extensions you are interested in and place free reservation orders. You'll be kept up to date regarding the selected extensions and can, if you wish, turn them into final orders when the time comes to decide.


5. Rate increase at the Registries
--------------------------------------------
Price increase? Yes, as we had announced last year, several major gTLDs ( namely .NET .ORG, .INFO, .BIZ and .NAME) will increase in price this summer. Interestingly, .COM will not increase, because the U.S. government did not authorize a price hike. We are, unfortuneatly, going to have to pass on this increase to our customers, and so these domains will end up more expensive by $0.51 to $0.78. For full details, dates and prices, see here.



6. Reminder of our current promotions

Here's a little reminder of the promotions we are currently running on domain names:

1. On trial: Site migration service
-------------------------------
Why don't people move web hosts, even when they know that better performing and cheaper hosting (e.g. Gandi Simple Hosting) is available?Maybe it's the fact that there is work involved, that downtime is likely, or maybe we just don't want to bother with the DNS fiddling. In any case, many of us wait years to migrate.  

Some people do a lot of site migrations, and and completely comfortable with what's involved. Some of us have other things to do, like running a business, keeping up with the industry news, rewriting content for SEO, or other technical stuff that has nothing to do with where the web site is hosted. The task of migrating the web site just never makes top priority. That's when we could use a quick, efficiant service to move the site.  A service now offered by... Gandi!

Holy chameleons, Batman! We's got Open SUSE available for Gandi VPS Cloud servers. You can run OpenSUSE 12.1 servers in Europe or the USA, just by starting them up with the shares you buy. Choose your architecture (32 or 64 bit) and make some chameleons run!

Featured this month is the sunrise for “accented” character in extensions offered by AFNIC, including the most famous:  .FR.

Slightly lower in European impact, but still significant, the Portuguese national extension (.PT) is open as of May 1, and, on this same date, .UK  will be able to be registered for 1 to 10 years (instead of the previous minimum 2 years).
We added two extensions to our collection, .MG and .IO. You will find, as always, the perennial section summarizing the domain name promotions for the month of May, and then, to conclude, some news about our Web Hosting API and a new Ubuntu distribution for our servers.

1. Accented Domains from AFNIC
----------------------------------
We often talk about IDN, or Internationalized Domain Names. One aspect of this type of domain is that a domain name can contain one or more accented characters. This lets you distinguish your domain from the clearly less stylish, unaccented versions! For instance: meme.fr, mémé.fr and
même.fr, are 3 distinct names, not just variations on a meme. Making these available has to be done carefully however, to avoid a potential cybersquatting issue with trademarked un-accented versions. To do this properly, AFNIC has proposed a kind of “sunrise-based” registration period. It’s dependent on ownership of the name, without accents.
To continue with the example above, if you have meme.fr, then for the next two months you have the opportunity to register any and all accented forms. From May 3rd on, owners of domains in .FR, .RE, .YT, .PM, .WF, and .TF can register accented versions. If you don’t own such a domain in unaccented form, just wait. 2. The Opening of .PT to everyone
-------------------
Until now, if you wanted to register a .PT (the Portuguese national extension) you had to show credentials proving that you were a legitimate company, registered in Europe, and that the name you wished to register was the exact business name of the company.
No more! Since May 1st, you can register any name you like with a .PT extension (except of course for certain terms prohibited by the registry, as is the case for every extension).

You must provide (as applicable):
- Your EU VAT No. for companies in the EU
- An identification code for companies and individuals not in the EU
- A fiscal code for Portuguese nationals
- A passport number for individuals of other nationalities

3. One Year Registration of British Extensions

Being fond of exceptions, our friends in the United Kingdom had long ago decided that a .UK domain name must be registered for a minimum of 2 years, and that it could be renewed only six months before the expiration date.
Well, like many exceptions, this rule has fallen to the tyranny of the majority, and the new rule, in force since May 1st, allows registration of a .UK (that is, .CO.UK, .ORG.UK, or a  .ME.UK) for as little as a single year. Actually, you
can also renew a .UK for over 2 years (up to 10,
like other extensions). This is good news.
One minor caveat: registering for a single year costs you more per year than if you take it for 2+ years.

4. Two NEW Extensions at Gandi: .MG and .IO

Two new extensions are being made available to Gandi customers this month, with the Malagasy .MG and the very “Input/Output” appropriate .IO. A .MG will cost you the tidy sum of € 90.00 for one year, grid A. All the prices are here:

The British Indian Ocean Territory is much more accessible, and very popular with us geeks, because of its representation of I/O (the abbreviation for Input/Output in computerspeak). 6. Server API Brings New Opportunities
------------------------------------------
If you are a user of the Gandi API (or not yet, for that matter), it has probably not escaped you that you could not buy Gandi server resources (in IaaS) directly via the API. This situation will be ancient history, starting May 7. This opens new opportunities to potential resellers (you, for example). You can now purchase and deploy complete IaaS server solutions right from your own applications.
It’s also useful for configuration management, too. You can now script the whole life cycle of a server, to you own specifications. Fire them up automatically, re-configure them on the fly, take them down when conditions you define are met.
If you want to test this API, it’s already available in the test region (OT & E). It will be promoted to production on May 7th. For more information and feedback

7. The Simple Hosting API

In case you missed it, you should know that the API
for Simple Hosting management is available in Production
at Gandi, since April 19. With it, you can create your own interfaces for reselling our Simple Hosting solution directly. You can easily combine it wit the API that controls domain names, which means you can easily resell full solutions,
packaging hosting with domain name registration. The possibilities are endless.

8. New Ubuntu VPS Image Available

Of all the members of the Ubuntu family of strange animals, I would like to have a pet Pangolin.
Ubuntu 12.04 is now available for Gandi VPS Servers in 32 and 64 bit versions. This version of Ubuntu, called Precise Pangolin is the latest, and it is scheduled to be maintained for 5 years (or until April 2017). Come see what a Pangolin looks like ☺

# More .UK News
We have more good news from Nominet. It used to be your only option
for registering a .uk domain was to do so for a minimum of two years.
Luckily for us, .UK domains will soon be available for just one year at a time! The rules change May 1, so get ready for more flexibility in your .UK domain management.

# The .PRO dance
If you've always wanted a .PRO, you probably already know the rules have changed, making it easier than ever to register your own domain with the extension exclusively for professionals and their companies. There is also a 75% discount in effect right now, and this unique opportunity runs out this month (it ends May 1).  After that, the price goes up 36% for registrars like Gandi, to cover the registry’s cost of checking the validity of the owners. This increase uncharacteristically applies to renewals as well as new registrations, and will apply to .PRO domains you transfer to Gandi.
So you don’t get caught off guard by this increase,
we are offering you a promo code good for a 2.00€ reduction off the VAT tax on your renewal. This will soften the blow for those who have to pay VAT on top of the increased price, and we will honor it on renewals from 2 up to 9 years (VAT applies to customers in the European Union).

# A simple Simple Hosting improvement
Some of you have managed to crash your Apache processes running on the Simple Hosting platform. It’s not as hard to do this as it should be: putting a foot wrong the PHP code is the most common method we see people inadvertently use.
It’s not that big a deal, usually, since restarting Apache fixes the problem, at least temporarily. The issue was that with Simple Hosting, you actually needed to contact our support line to do this. No more!  We have added restart to the list of actions you can take on your instance. Look for a little blue arrow on your list of pending operations:

# Coming Soon to Gandi
In the next few weeks, we will proudly debut another choice for WYSIWYG web site editors. “Basekit” is getting added to Gandi! Unlike SiteMaker, which uses Flash, Basekit will create your website in HTML and CSS (perfect for display on the New iPad you can win from Nominet). It’s going to be offered by Gandi with a free beginner site, of course, and some nice, reasonably priced extension packages.
What else is new? Well, of course we are adding new extensions, some for regular customers, and some reserved for Corporate clients, since they are complicated to manage due to registry rules and restrictions, and mainly of interest only for brand protection purposes. We have also added little enhancements here and there, and fixed minor problems some you have reported (thank you!).
